Hope: The first Arabian spacecraft to launch in summer
for Mars
The United Arab Emirates and the Arab world in general
have high hopes for the robotic spacecraft Hope (Hope), due to launch this
summer on the planet Mars.
Hope, which will be the size and weight of a car, is the
Emirates' attempt to acquire - with the help of foreign partners - a space
technology similar to that of India.
The start came last year, when the Emirates bought a
place on a Russian Soyuz rocket, sending their first astronaut to the
International Space Station for a few days.
Robotic mission to Mars
The next most ambitious step will be a robotic mission to
Mars, added to similar more well-known missions to the "red" planet,
planned for this summer by the US Space Agency (NASA), China and the European
Space Agency. (ESA) in collaboration with Russian Roscosmos.
While other missions intend to send a robotic rover to
the surface of Mars, the Arabian mission - if all goes well - will limit itself
to orbiting the neighboring planet. But even so, it will be a technological
triumph for the Emirates.
It will stay two years in orbit around Mars
India had done something similar in 2014, but the Indian
ship lacked sensitive instruments to make worthy observations, unlike Hope
equipped with more sophisticated scientific instruments (two spectrometers and
one camera), studying the atmosphere, temperature changes and the Martian
weather.
Hope is intended to stay at least two years in orbit to
cover all seasons of the Martian year, corresponding to approximately two Earth
years.
Women on the "mission" to Mars
The vessel was assembled at the University of Colorado,
USA, in collaboration with the Universities of Arizona and California-Berkeley
and with the Emirates Engineering and Scientists Partnership. It is noteworthy
that one-third of the Arab team of engineers was made up of women (something
quite unusual for the Arab world), with 90% being up to 35 years old. In fact,
in the Emirates scientific team that will study the Hope data from Mars, 80%
will be women.
Days ago, Hope was shipped from the United States to
Dubai (one of the Emirates' seven states) by a giant Russian transporter
Antonov. After new tests it will be flown to Japan, where it will launch for
Mars.
To date, only the US, Europe, Russia-USSR and India have
sent ships around or on Mars. Hope's goal is to reach Mars before December
2021, when the United Arab Emirates will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
The name Hope was chosen precisely to convey the message
of hope and pride to the new generation of the Arab world. Its mission is
funded exclusively by the Emirates Space Agency, which was created in 2014,
according to the New York Times.
