Honor View 20 in pictures: It all depends on the hole

A hole in the screen : what sounds like the sad result of an unwanted rendezvous between smartphone and cobblestones is the main feature of the new Honor View 20. What optical highlights the Honor phone has to offer beyond the "punch-hole" display, we show in the photo gallery.

Bye, "Notch": After the controversial screen gap has dominated the past smartphone year, 2019 will be the year of the display hole. In this country, the Honor View 20, which was launched by the Huawei subsidiary of the same name in January 2019 at a price of 569 euros *, marks the beginning.

With its powerful Kirin 980 processor, up to 8 GB of RAM and a 48-MP camera, the Honor View 20 does not have to hide from much more expensive smartphones. But what about the look? Visually, the View 20 also brings some delicacies - which we look at now. Here we go!

Proud 6.4 inches measures the LCD display (2,340 x 1,080 pixels) in Honor View 20. Thus, the Honor phone plays in a league with the iPhone XS Max, Galaxy Note 9 or other XXL smartphones. Striking are the narrow edges around the display.

But the real highlight is somewhere else ... Instead of a screen gap ("notch") integrates the manufacturer in the Honor View 20 a hole in the display, which lives in the upper left corner and provides space for the 25 MP front camera. One has to get used to this look - less noticeable than a big cut in the upper center of the display is such a "punch hole" but always.

How does such a display hole actually do in everyday use?

When watching videos, for example, such a small hole, of course, less obvious than a "notch", especially in black backgrounds. But the display hole is not completely invisible.

Not inconspicuous is the back of the Honor View 20 ...

Nomen est omen: The glass back of the Honor View 20 reflects a V-pattern that reflects different colors depending on the light. Already with the black model (photo), the effect comes out well, but in the red and blue versions, the light play is likely to be even more spectacular.

A closer look at the back of the Honor View 20 reveals yet another ...

It is written in the upper right corner: "AI VISION" - like many of the current Honor and Huawei smartphones, the Honor View 20 has an NPU ("Neural Processing Unit") that uses artificial intelligence to change the settings of the 48-MP camera to automatically adapt to the subject. Support is provided by a 3D sensor for depth information, which allows beautiful bokeh effects with blurred background. How well that works, we will find out in a camera test of the View 20. Also on the back: the fingerprint sensor to unlock the device.

A little disappointment is at the bottom of the Honor View 20 ...

The Honor View 20 has only one mono speaker (right) installed. Although he makes a comparatively good figure, nevertheless we would have liked the stereo sound. After all: At least the Honor View 20 has a USB-C port for charging the 4,000 mAh battery. On the far left is the microphone.

A little curiosity can be found in the settings of the Honor View 20 ...
